I’m not sure how I skipped over one of the biggest trips we took this year. At the end of April, we flew to Athens, Greece for a few nights before embarking on a week-long sailing trip around the Greek islands, then flew to Rome for 3 nights to end the trip.
Our friends Chris and Jessy met us in Athens with two other friends and we did the touristy things like Acropolis and such. We had some good food and Megan and I enjoyed walking up Lycabettus Hill and Nymphs Hill more than actually going to the overcrowded Acropolis.
Chris and Jessy are sailing enthusiasts and we finally got to partake in one of their sailing adventures. It was a really cool experience and sleeping on the water under the Temple of Poseidon on our first night will always stand out to me. Other highlights include secluded beach coves, island hopping and exploring, the daily challenge of simply docking, and just being out at sea with nobody else around.
We visited Serifos, Poros, and now I can’t remember them all. Stupid brain. I think Loutra was another. Our Captain did a great job and I had minimal responsibility. My two roles were placing a big bumper ball between the boat and anything that we didn’t want to run into and helping ensure the anchor line did not get bunched up. It was a good introduction to sailing.
It was a nice, wide boat like a 43 footer so it had a nice little kitchen, 4 bedrooms with little bathrooms. I will say, the shitty thing (pun intended) about this boat was you had to put the toilet paper in the trash bin, not down the toilet. That’s how it was in most businesses in Athens. That was the biggest challenge of the whole trip.
After we wrapped up the sailing trip, just Megan and I flew into Rome. Neither of us had ever been there and they had direct flights home to Charlotte, so we decided to check it out for a few nights en route home. Despite having a sore throat that started the last night on the boat, we had some great food and enjoyed our time in Rome. We made a last second decision to visit the Coliseum after reading something online that said, not going to the Coliseum is like not going to the Acropolis in Athens which we nearly skipped as well had it not been for the rest of our party wanting to go.
