Penthouse Blues: Urban Parable (The FI Poem)

There once was a couple who did love their life
In no time at all, they were man and wife
They sat on their porch outside their first floor
But by 4 o’clock, the sun was no more

They both loved the sun, the warmth felt so nice
When he mentioned they move, they didn’t think twice
An upgrade’s in order, both did agree
So they moved two floors up to live on floor three

After a month, they were all settled in
So back on the porch they sat once again
The sun it did shine, but shine not too long
They couldn’t quite say, but something was wrong

If we only lived higher more sun we could see
To the top of the building above the shade tree
Without much thought he said “say no more”
By the end of the year they were on the top floor

The rent did go up, the price it was steep
They couldn’t afford to waste time on sleep
Longer hours they worked so rent they could pay
But lost all free time at the end of the day

The sun it did shine but they were not there
All they could say was “this life is not fair”
Despite all their money and living on top
All of a sudden their love seemed to stop

Not knowing their dreams, just chasing the sun
Their happiest times still back on floor one
